I don’t normally post things like this but I think this is relevant to the interests of a lot of fans on tumblr.
The small Visual Effects Studio “Rhythm and Hues” is in danger of going out of business and are currently hoping to petition for a Government Bailout.
If the studio goes under, hundreds of hardworking people will be out of jobs and an already small industry will grow even smaller.
This studio has worked on effects for hundreds of films that a lot of us love and admire including, The Hunger Games, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Snow White and the Huntsman and many others.
If you have liked, obsessed over, drawn art, wrote fic, downloaded pictures from or made meme/pic spam/reaction gifs from any of these movies (or movies with a lot of digital effects), then please read on, because the hard working people of Rhythm and Hues need your help.
If you are unfamiliar with how the visual effects industry works— This is an extremely simplified explanation— a small studio puts in bids for various contracts that movie studios looking for vfx for their films put out. A lot of times the little guy has to underbid just to get the contract for their studio. (The industry is not a very healthy place right now.)
If they win a bid, they’ll usually hire contract workers to do the vfx. These workers always get laid off at the end of a production and jump from studio to studio looking for work. There are really no full time jobs for entry level people any more in the visual effects industry anymore (with few exceptions).
Rhythm is one of the very few places that actually gives students and people with little to no experience a chance (unlike other larger studios I will not name, who “claim” to give recent grads and the inexperienced a chance, but mostly recruit new trainees from smaller studios like Rhythm).
These people who now have worked at Rhythm then have the experience to be considered by other, larger vfx houses when their contract ends and they have to go back on the job hunt.
If Rhythm folds, it will really hurt a lot of artists and will cripple the industry even more than it already is. Jobs are very scarce right now and a lot of hardworking people will lose a source of income. Many are recent graduates with hundreds of thousands of dollars in education debt that they took on in the hope of doing something they love, helping to make stories come to life through film.
All they are asking for are signatures to get them considered for a little financial assistance so they won’t have to shut their doors forever.
Please take a moment to sign the petition. It’s easy, you can then use your account to sign other petitions of interest.
The deadline is March 7, 2013
I’m merely bringing this to your attention. Please make your own informed decision on whether to sign or not.
I know the power of fandom, and how much love we have, and I hope that some of that sheer awesomeness can help out this struggling studio, whose work we greatly admire.
Please sign and reblog! Thanks everybody for listening
